Home Depot vs RONA: who is cheaper on the same products?

We compare Quebec stores today and are rolling out province by province, so these are dated Quebec prices, not Canadian averages. Each banner also runs flyers that change every week, which is why the honest answer is to compare the products on your list rather than to pick a store by name.

Head to head, product by product

We only count a product when both banners carry it, so a missing line is skipped rather than guessed. RONA is cheaper on 6 of them, Home Depot on 3, with 0 ties.

We left out 2x4x8 SPF stud: one banner's lowest listing is an economy grade board and the other's is not, which is not a fair match.

A price gap of a few percent on a stud is small in dollars and large on a truckload, so look at the gap on the products you actually buy. The brand can differ from one banner to the other: we match the size and the type, and the footnote gives the dates.

Who they are

RONA was founded in Quebec as a cooperative of independent hardware dealers. It was owned by Lowe's from 2016, and in 2023 Lowe's sold its Canadian retail business, RONA included, to the American private equity firm Sycamore Partners. In 2024 the Réno-Dépôt warehouse stores became RONA+, so a search for Réno-Dépôt now lands on a RONA store.

Home Depot is an American home improvement chain with stores across Canada. Both banners sell to homeowners and to contractors, and both run programs for professionals, so compare the terms against your own volume.

As of spring 2026, RONA counts roughly 125 points of service in Quebec across its banners, corporate and affiliated stores included, and Home Depot counts 31 stores in the province, mostly in cities. The two lists change, so check each banner's store finder for your area.

What to check besides the sticker price

Delivery is where the totals split. Both banners deliver to a job site, with fees that depend on the distance and the load, so add delivery to the shelf price before you compare a full order.

The next thing is stock. A cheap price on a product that is out of stock at your branch costs you a second trip. Check the branch, not only the website.

The last is the flyer. Both banners publish a new flyer weekly, and a one-week sale can flip the result of a comparison like the one above.

In your province: what Statistics Canada says

The shelf prices on this page are what Quebec retailers charge. If you build somewhere else, the best official yardstick we have is Statistics Canada's building construction price index, which follows what builders pay for residential building as a whole in each province.

Quebec, where our shelf prices come from, reads 113.3, up 5.0% on a year earlier. Alberta is highest at 117.8 and Ontario lowest at 106.6 in the second quarter of 2026. These are cost indexes set to 100 in a base period: they say how fast residential building costs have moved in each province, not what a single item sells for at your local store. We will publish real shelf prices for your province as it goes live.

The table shows the trend. The real verdict is on your own list.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions

Is Home Depot cheaper than RONA?

It depends on the product. On the 9 like-for-like products we found at both banners in Quebec, the split is as follows. RONA is cheaper on 6 of them, Home Depot on 3, with 0 ties. Compare the products on your own list, because the answer changes by product and by week.

Is Réno-Dépôt the same as RONA?

Réno-Dépôt was the warehouse banner of the RONA group in Quebec. In 2024 its stores were converted to RONA+, so Réno-Dépôt and RONA now belong to the same company. Home Depot is a separate, competing chain.

Who owns RONA?

Since 2023, RONA belongs to the American private equity firm Sycamore Partners, which bought Lowe's Canadian retail business. RONA was founded in Quebec and keeps its head office there.

Which one has better prices on lumber?

It changes by product and by week, and neither banner is always the cheapest in Quebec. Our lumber comparison puts every Quebec retailer we track side by side on the same sizes.

Do these prices apply outside Quebec?

Not directly. Every price on this page is what a Quebec retailer charged on the date shown. Buildsavr is live in Quebec today and rolling out province by province, so we do not publish shelf prices for other provinces yet. Statistics Canada's construction price indexes, quoted on this page, show how building costs differ from one province to the next, but only a store's own tag tells you what you will pay.
