The price at every store we track

The table is the 2x6x8 price at each Quebec retailer, seen October 13, 2026. RONA is cheapest at $4.92 and BMR the priciest at $6.98, a gap of $2.06 per board (42 percent).

RONA lists an economy grade 2x6 as its lowest price. Economy grade is a step below stud grade, so some of the gap is the board and not the store.

Why builders in cold climates frame with 2x6

A 2x6 measures about 1 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches once dried and planed. A wall framed with it is 5 1/2 inches deep, against 3 1/2 inches for a 2x4 wall, and that extra depth is room for more insulation. It is also why a standard R20 fibreglass batt is sized for a 2x6 cavity.

The same board is used for floor joists and rafters over short spans. How far a 2x6 can span depends on the species, the grade, the spacing and the load, so use your local building code and span tables rather than a rule of thumb.

What a 2x6 wall costs next to a 2x4 wall

Studs at 16 inches on centre use about 0.75 studs per linear foot of wall, plates not counted. At the median price we tracked on each size, that is $2.84 of studs per foot of wall in 2x4 and $4.84 in 2x6. A 2x6 stud costs about 1.70 times a 2x4 stud.

The stud is the small part of the difference. A deeper wall also takes more insulation, deeper window and door jambs, and longer fasteners. Price those too before you decide.

In your province: what Statistics Canada says

The shelf prices on this page are what Quebec retailers charge. If you build somewhere else, the best official yardstick we have is Statistics Canada's building construction price index, which follows what builders pay for wood, plastics and composites in a single-detached house in each province.

Quebec, where our shelf prices come from, reads 118.8, up 5.0% on a year earlier. That is the highest of the 9 provinces Statistics Canada tracks, and Ontario is lowest at 97.4 in the second quarter of 2026. These are cost indexes set to 100 in a base period: they say how fast lumber and panel costs have moved in each province, not what a single item sells for at your local store. We will publish real shelf prices for your province as it goes live.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions

How much does a 2x6x8 cost right now?

As of October 13, 2026, a 2x6x8 costs $4.92 to $6.98 at the Quebec retailers Buildsavr tracks, before tax. RONA is cheapest at $4.92 and BMR the priciest at $6.98, a gap of $2.06 per board (42 percent).

Is a 2x6 really 2 inches by 6 inches?

No. The name is the nominal size. After drying and planing a 2x6 measures about 1 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches. The length is true, so a 2x6x8 is 8 feet long.

Is 2x6 wall framing worth the extra cost over 2x4?

It costs more in lumber, and the wall also takes more insulation. In return you get a deeper cavity for insulation, which matters in cold climates. Your building code sets the minimum insulation for your climate zone, so check what it requires before you choose the framing size.

How far can a 2x6 span?

It depends on the species, the grade, the spacing and the load it carries, and on whether it is a joist, a rafter or a header. Use the span tables in your local building code or ask an engineer or your building inspector. We do not publish spans because a wrong one is unsafe.

Why is one store much cheaper than the others?

Part of it can be the board. RONA lists an economy grade 2x6 at its lowest price, and economy grade is a step below stud grade. The rest comes from each store's supply costs and its weekly flyer.

Can I use an untreated 2x6 outdoors?

Not in contact with the ground or exposed to rain. Untreated SPF is meant for dry, protected framing. For decks and other outdoor structures use pressure-treated lumber.

Does this 2x6 price apply outside Quebec?

Not directly. Every price on this page is what a Quebec retailer charged on the date shown. Buildsavr is live in Quebec today and rolling out province by province, so we do not publish shelf prices for other provinces yet. Statistics Canada's construction price indexes, quoted on this page, show how building costs differ from one province to the next, but only a store's own tag tells you what you will pay.
