In cold climates the vapour control layer sits on the warm side of the insulation, which is the interior face of the wall, and its seams are sealed with tape. How tight it needs to be, and whether you also need an air barrier or exterior insulation, depends on your climate zone and the building code.

The R-value your walls must reach also depends on your climate zone and code. Check the requirement for your project before you buy, because R20 is not the answer everywhere.

R20 batts are made to fill a 2x6 stud cavity, which is about 5 1/2 inches deep. They are not meant for 2x4 walls, where a thinner batt fits. Read the size on the pack.

Do I need a vapour barrier with fibreglass insulation?

Is R20 enough for my region?

It depends on your climate zone and building code. Some projects need a higher R-value in the walls, or exterior insulation on top of the cavity. Look up what your code asks for before you buy.
