Drywall sheet price in Canada: what a 1/2 inch 4x8 costs at Quebec retailers

The table is the price of one regular 1/2 inch 4x8 sheet at each Quebec retailer, seen October 13, 2026. Home Depot Canada is cheapest at $16.98 and Matério the priciest at $19.99, a gap of $3.01 per sheet (18 percent).

Most of these listings are lightweight panels, the common choice for walls and ceilings. A sheet covers 32 square feet.

Pick the type first, then the size. Regular 1/2 inch is for most walls and ceilings. Moisture-resistant board is for rooms that see humidity, such as a bathroom, but it is not a substitute for a proper waterproof backer in a shower. Type X, which is thicker and fire-rated, goes where the code asks for fire resistance, such as a wall between a garage and the house.

Longer sheets (4x10 and 4x12) mean fewer joints on a tall wall or a long ceiling, at a higher price per sheet. Compare them per square foot, and ask whether you can carry them up your stairs.

A worked example: a 8 by 10 ft room with 8 ft walls has 288 sq ft of wall and 80 sq ft of ceiling, 368 sq ft in all, before subtracting doors and windows. Over 32 sq ft per sheet, plus about 10 percent for cuts, that is 13 sheets.

At the prices above, 13 regular 1/2 inch sheets cost $221 at the cheapest store we track and $260 at the priciest, before tax. Tape, joint compound, screws and corner bead are extra.

The shelf prices on this page are what Quebec retailers charge. If you build somewhere else, the best official yardstick we have is Statistics Canada's building construction price index, which follows what builders pay for residential building as a whole in each province.

Quebec, where our shelf prices come from, reads 113.3, up 5.0% on a year earlier. Alberta is highest at 117.8 and Ontario lowest at 106.6 in the second quarter of 2026. These are cost indexes set to 100 in a base period: they say how fast residential building costs have moved in each province, not what a single item sells for at your local store. We will publish real shelf prices for your province as it goes live.
