The cheapest bundle at each store

The table shows the cheapest shingle model each Quebec retailer lists, seen September 25, 2026. The lowest was $38.96 at Matério.

Shingles come in many brands, lines and colours, so these rows are not one identical bundle. A store can look cheap because its cheapest model is a basic line. Compare lines in the next section before you decide.

3-tab or architectural

A 3-tab shingle is flat, thinner and the cheaper of the two. An architectural shingle (also called dimensional or laminated) is thicker, has a layered look and usually carries a longer warranty. Most houses today are roofed in architectural shingles, and the basic 3-tab is typically kept for sheds and outbuildings.

Read the warranty before you pay for it. Many shingle warranties are prorated, meaning the coverage shrinks as the roof ages, and some leave out labour after a few years.

What a roof takes besides shingles

A worked example: 1,500 sq ft of roof is 15 squares, which is 45 bundles, or 50 with 10 percent for waste. At the cheapest model each store lists, that is $1,948 to $2,149 of shingles, before tax.

Shingles are only part of the roof system. Price the underlayment, the starter shingles at the eaves, the ridge and hip caps and the nails too, using your real roof area, and add them to the bundles.

Do not skip the parts you cannot see. A self-adhering membrane along the eaves, around chimneys and in valleys, proper flashing and enough ventilation are what keep a new roof from leaking. Your roof deck matters too, so make sure the sheathing under the shingles is sound.

In your province: what Statistics Canada says

The shelf prices on this page are what Quebec retailers charge. If you build somewhere else, the best official yardstick we have is Statistics Canada's building construction price index, which follows what builders pay for residential building as a whole in each province.

Quebec, where our shelf prices come from, reads 113.3, up 5.0% on a year earlier. Alberta is highest at 117.8 and Ontario lowest at 106.6 in the second quarter of 2026. These are cost indexes set to 100 in a base period: they say how fast residential building costs have moved in each province, not what a single item sells for at your local store. We will publish real shelf prices for your province as it goes live.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions

How much does a bundle of asphalt shingles cost?

As of September 25, 2026, the cheapest model at each Quebec retailer we track costs $38.96 to $42.98 per bundle. Across 130 models the range is $38.96 to $69.98, depending on the line. Prices are before tax.

How many bundles of shingles do I need?

Three bundles cover one square (100 sq ft). For a roof of 1,500 sq ft that is 45 bundles, or about 50 with 10 percent for waste. A steep or complicated roof can need more.

Is architectural better than 3-tab?

For a house, usually yes: it is thicker, lasts longer and carries a longer warranty, at a higher price per bundle. A 3-tab shingle is a budget choice, mostly used for sheds and outbuildings. Read the warranty terms of the product you pick.

What else does a roof need besides shingles?

Underlayment, starter shingles at the eaves, ridge and hip caps, nails, flashing, and a self-adhering membrane at the eaves and in valleys. Price these with your real roof area, and remember that ventilation matters too.

When is the best time to buy shingles?

We have not measured a seasonal pattern in our own price history, so we will not claim one. Check the weekly flyers, and price your whole list rather than the bundle alone.

Can I install shingles in cold weather?

Manufacturers publish minimum installation temperatures, because the sealing strip needs warmth to bond. Below that, extra steps such as hand-sealing may be required. Follow the instructions on the package.

Does this shingle price apply outside Quebec?

Not directly. Every price on this page is what a Quebec retailer charged on the date shown. Buildsavr is live in Quebec today and rolling out province by province, so we do not publish shelf prices for other provinces yet. Statistics Canada's construction price indexes, quoted on this page, show how building costs differ from one province to the next, but only a store's own tag tells you what you will pay.

When will Buildsavr cover my province?
